What happens to conversation after dark

An anthropologist found that conversation changes after dark, around a fire. Why our homes rarely make room for that moment, and one backyard in South Surrey that does.

Anthropologist Polly Wiessner spent years living with the Ju/'hoan people in southern Africa. In 2014 she published something that stayed with me.

She compared the conversations people had during the day with the ones they had at night, around the fire. During the day, people talked about work, land, complaints, plans. At night, the talk changed. It turned into stories. About people who weren't there. About the past. About the world beyond the camp.

The fire didn't just keep people warm. It created a different kind of time.

I think most of us know this without reading the research. The best conversations of your life probably didn't happen at a desk. They happened on a back porch, at a campsite, at a table after the plates were cleared, when nobody was looking at the clock.

Our homes rarely give that moment a place. We have rooms for eating, rooms for sleeping, rooms for screens. Fewer for lingering.

That is what caught my attention at 2258 Madrona Place in South Surrey. The backyard was clearly designed for staying outside longer. There is a fire pit, a hot tub, an outdoor heater and several dining areas. There is also an outdoor kitchen with a built-in natural gas BBQ and cooktop, so whoever is cooking doesn't disappear inside.

The home itself has 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and over 4,500 sq ft across three finished levels, with 18 ft ceilings in the great room, an office, a games room and a home cinema. Schools, shopping and White Rock are close by.

But if I had to describe it in one line, I would say it's a house that makes room for the conversations that happen after dark.
