Why your best ideas need a higher ceiling

In 2007, a study found that higher ceilings make people think more broadly. What that means for the rooms we live in, and a house in South Surrey built around that feeling.

In 2007, two researchers, Joan Meyers-Levy and Rui Zhu, ran a simple experiment. They put people in rooms with different ceiling heights and gave them the same tasks. People in the rooms with higher ceilings tended to think more broadly. They made more abstract connections. People under lower ceilings focused more on details.

Researchers started calling it the cathedral effect.

It makes sense when you think about it. We feel it in old churches, in libraries, in train stations built a century ago. You walk in and your shoulders drop. You breathe a little slower. Your thoughts get more room too.

Most of us spend our days under standard 8 ft ceilings. Offices, apartments, cars. We rarely stop to ask what that space is doing to our mood, or to the way we talk with the people we live with.

When I walk through homes with clients, ceiling height is one of the things people feel before they can name it. They step into a room and say "oh, this is nice" without knowing why.

That was my reaction at 2258 Madrona Place in South Surrey.

The great room has 18 ft ceilings and a lot of natural light. It is the kind of room where a Sunday morning feels longer. Around it, the home has a formal dining room, a dedicated office and a generous kitchen with a separate wok kitchen. Upstairs is a spacious primary suite. Downstairs, a games room and home cinema.

In total, 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and over 4,500 sq ft across three finished levels. And a landscaped backyard with an outdoor kitchen, hot tub and fire pit.

Space doesn't make a family. But the right space gives everyone a little more room to think, rest and come together.
